4th and 5th January 2025
The Target World Paradarts Masters Championships 2024 started on Friday afternoon with the players who qualified from the 23/24 season, 32 wheelchair players and 47 standing players from 15 countries across the world. (England, Wales, France, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Austria, Hungary, New Zealand, Malta, Northern Ireland, Canada, Isle of Man and Czechia).
The players had a chance to meet old friends and make new friends whilst playing the group games, round robins. They played down to the last few games leaving in time to watch the Ally Pally finals.
On Friday Lorraine Winstanley from Target Darts attended the tournament and presented the following awards:
Steve North (Eng) ranked no 1 standing player for season 2023/2024
Vinnie D'Hondt (Bel) ranked No 1 wheelchair player for season 2023/2024
Matt Doe - a special award for Services to disability darts
Evert Zomer- a special award for Services to disability darts.
Saturday saw the players play their last one or two game of the round robins with the top 2 from each group going through to the last 16 round of the round robin.
In the Standing Masters:
8 countries were represented in the final 16 players.
The 1st semi-final between Bernhard Haider (AST) and Bruno Laurent (Fra) went to a close decider leg with Bernard winning 4:3. The 2nd semi saw Heiko Bonhorst (Ger) take the edge over Paul Gelder (Eng) winning 5:2.
The Standing Masters Champion 2024 was Heiko Bonhorst following a close final beating Bernhard 5:2.
In the Wheelchair Masters;
6 countries were represented in the final 16 players.
The semi-finals saw the finalists getting through comfortably with Vinnie D’Hondt (Bel) get, beating Carsten Steensig (Den) 4:0 and Jesper Andersen (Den) beating Anton Van Hemert (Ndl) 4:1.
Vinnie D’Hondt went on to retain his Masters title by winning against Jesper 5:0 and is our Target World ParaDarts Wheelchair Masters Champion 2024
Sunday was the Target World ParaDarts World Championships 2024 for both the wheelchair and standing category, both tournaments being a knockout format.
The Standing World Championships;
In the first semi-final, number 4 seed Jon Hirst (Eng), having knocked out the number one seed in the previous round was beaten by the unseeded Danny Paspont (Bel) in a decider leg 4:3. The second semi-finals saw another close game with Kurt Vandekerckhove (Bel) beating Bruno Laurent (Fra) in the decider leg 4:3.
The final saw Kurt retain his title and becoming Target World ParaDarts Standing World Champion 2024, beating Danny 5:2
The Wheelchair World Championships;
The first semi-final was between Belgium players Vinnie D’Hondt and Serge Van Belle, with Vinnie getting through to the final 4:1. The 2nd semi final was between England’s Darren Kennish and Steve Plimley with Darren winning 1:4
The final was therefore between the 1st and 2nd seeded players and was the closest final we have ever seen, going to a decider leg when both players had chances to take the leg and finally saw Vinnie retain his title and became the Target World ParaDarts Wheelchair World Champion 2024.
